A portion of the once extensive Ortona site (1,000 BC - AD 1650) is owned by Glades County and is interpreted in a kiosk containing a site map and 3 panels of explanatory text. The Ortona site encompasses prehistoric mounds, canoe canals and other earthworks built by Native Americans. The site consists of a central mound complex and additional mounds scattered over a five-square-mile area on the north side of the Caloosahatchee River. With its widely dispersed mounds, Ortona is one of the largest sites in Florida. If you go to Ortona, be sure to look for the impressive Hendry County Courthouse (Mediterranean Revival, 1927) as you drive through LaBelle on SR 80. Address: SR 78, north of La Belle Open: Daily, sunup to sundown. Admission: No charge. Rest rooms, picnic shelters, playground. Handicapped accessibity is limited; there are no paved walkways and no ramp to the elevated interpretive kiosk. Allow 30 minutes minimum. |
