Be Safe. Buckle Up!
Because Safety Matters.

AAA Auto Club South is dedicated to protecting and advancing freedom of mobility and improving traffic safety. With that in mind, we at AAA have committed ourselves to making the roadways safer for everyone. This includes specific actions to remind people about the importance of buckling up and the elimination of distracted driving habits, such as texting while driving, that take our eyes and mind off the road.

With the exception of 1992, there have been more than 40,000 deaths on our roads every year for the past four decades which equates to more than 1.6 million people killed in traffic crashes, yet society appears to be complacent to the carnage. We need a stronger culture of traffic safety where individuals take responsibility for their own safety as well as the safety of others. A great place to begin is with the two most powerful words in traffic safety: Buckle up. Safety belt usage is so important that usage is mandatory in many states and Florida recently passed a bill that makes safety belt usage mandatory in the state as of June 30, 2009.

Safety belts are only a part of what needs to be done to make roadways safer. Distracted driving is the cause of as many as 80 percent of all traffic crashes and includes cell phone use while driving, texting while driving, and anything else that may take the drivers attention off of the road.

The scene of drivers talking or texting while driving has become frightenly common. The convenience of instantly responding to Twitter and FaceBook messages on cell phones has increased the popularity of sending, writing and reading text messages or emails while driving seems to have made many motorists forget the magnitude of the fact they are maneuvering a four-ton vehicle often at speeds of up to 60 mph.

It is not yet illegal to talk on a cell phone or text while driving in the states of Florida and Georgia, but AAA continuously works to implement laws such as this that prove to save lives. In accordance with a AAA association-wide push to pass federal and state laws that ban text messaging by drivers in all 50 states by 2013, we are happy to report that Tennessee took this safe-driving stand in 2009. Please take a minute to examine your own safety culture and make plans to participate in our campaign to improve traffic safety. The life you save could be your own.
